Writing Is The Key To Your Success

January 3, 2010 – 8:27 pm

It really doesn’t matter what you do or where you are going in life, one way or another, being able to write reasonably well in your primary language (English in this case) will be critical to whether you are successful or not.

However, contrary to what many people believe, you do not have to be a novelist or a professional copywriter to communicate effectively in writing. In fact, if you can talk informally to a friend or colleague you should also be able to write almost any type of day-to-day document for business or personal purposes.

A perfect example of this is in the online world of the Internet All you have to do is surf around online a bit to a few websites and take a look at the writing style that is typically used. Clearly, it’s not Nobel Prize quality writing that prevails online. In most cases, it is simple, down to earth, direct communication.

In reality, to write acceptable copy for online purposes, all you have to do is copy down the exact words you would use if you were sitting across the table from a friend, acquaintance or colleague explaining something to them IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Really, that’s how it is done. In fact, that is exactly what I do when I write content for my various websites, including this blog. All twelve of the “how to” books that I have written to-date are written in that style. In my opinion, for non-fiction writing there is no better way to do it. All you need to do is “write it as you speak it”!

My latest ebook/book “The Self Bailout Strategy” deals with this subject at length. In that book I devote a full 25 pages to explain the importance of creating simple, direct and easily readable content pages if one wants to build a successful website. In fact, the info website for that new book is a good example of the style of writing that is most effective online:

In that book I even demonstrate how virtually anyone who can speak basic English can also write effectively in English. And for those who still don’t believe that they can do it themselves — I show them how/where they can get others to do it for them for very little cost.

Please take note, that this “write it as you speak it” approach is not only effective online. I also use this style to write all kinds of practical documents in my daily life including: letters (business and personal), reports, essays, etc. I think if you try it, you will be surprised at how easy it is and how clearly you can communicate in writing if you don’t overcomplicate it and keep it simple, direct and conversational.

  19. Very good, concise instruction. I love your easy and smooth writing style. And, your latest book (Bailout Strategy) has committed me to finally get my own online, income-producing business up and going. You have made for me understandable what I was unable to glean from SBI for over a year. Their excellent lesson approach was just too structured for me. Your book allowed me the “grand overview” I needed to break the process down to workable parts. Thanks for reducing the process to such and understandable and doable process.
